Bodegas Castaño "Solanera": a Review

Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad.
    —Ecclesiasticus, ch. 38, v. 1

(Our sample bottle was purchased by us at standard retail.)

About Bodegas Castaño "Solanera"

Bodegas Castaño "Solanera" is a custom blend for the importer Eric Solomon (a rather reliable name), made in the Yecla region of Spain; the blend apparently varies year to year, but Monastrell dominates (through not overpoweringly), plus there are smaller amounts of (typically) Cabernet Sauvignon, and "Garnacha Tintorea" (which is not Grenache but rather Alicante Bouschet).

This Bodegas Castaño "Solanera" is very widely available in the U.S., with retail prices running from $11 up to $17, averaging $14. It is a hefty 14½% alcohol.

Bodegas Castaño "Solanera": Tasting Impressions

This is only an interim report, as one of us had a badly stuffed-up nose at tasting time; but we have three more bottles to hand, and so hope to update this before long.

From what could be determined, this was a rather big, full-bodied wine with strong, deep, dark, rich dark-fruit aromas and tastes (the usual plum/blackberry sort of combination). Its complexity and subtlety are the things that evaded a stuffed nose, but the early indications suggest a pretty good wine (and at an excellent QPR).

This completes the formerly "interim" report. To quote our notes from the day: "This is indeed a very nice wine (and probably has aging potential). Yes, it's a pretty big boy, with deep, dark-fruit nose & flavors; and it's at least moderately complex. Might be worth looking out in future." And for the bottle after that: "This is some mighty fine juice." All in all, it's just amazing for the price, and pretty good even on an absolute quality basis. Highly recommended.

On Wine Searcher's Tasting Notes page.

This wine has been a bit controversial, because Parker gave the 2012 some 94 points, which many posters (possibly going by price) seem to consider stupidly high.
